Learn the skill before you go.
Every experience asks something of you: fly a fighter kite, stretch silk over a bamboo frame, carve snow, build a craft that floats. These guides give you a refresher, things to practise at home, safety notes and official resources.
Five skills that cross festivals
Each guide covers a skill used by several experiences, and links back to them.
Festival build safety and Leave No Trace
Structural safety and documentation for art and shade; Fire and flame-effect safety and approvals; MOOP control and Leave No Trace.
Building human-powered and gravity-powered craft (karts, flying machines, beds, can boats, kinetic sculptures)
Designing to a rulebook: size, weight, power source and team size; Chassis, steering and brakes for gravity karts; Buoyancy and waterproof materials for water landings and crossings.
Kite basics: flying, making and field safety
Reading wind and choosing a flying spot; Launching single-line kites (solo and with a helper); In-flight corrections: bridle, tail, line length.
Lantern making and floating lights (silk lanterns, sky lanterns, krathongs)
Bamboo-rib frame and silk covering (Hoi An); Safe two-person sky-lantern release in a legal zone (Pingxi); Folding a biodegradable banana-leaf krathong (Loy Krathong).
Sculpting sand, snow and clay
Compaction: packing sand or snow into a dense block; Subtractive carving top-down with hand tools; Additive clay modelling: armature, layers, joins, slow drying.

Official first
- Official resources come from the organiser, a government or tourism board, a national governing body or UNESCO. 186 of our 190 skills resources are official.
- Community-accepted resources are used only when the event's community widely accepts them; each one says why.
- Where no official resource exists, the page says so. We don't fill the gap with blogs, SEO guides, listing sites or commercial sellers. The full domain list is in allowed_sources.json.
