Skills you'll need

What to learn and practise before you go. Each resource is marked Official or Community-accepted and names its publisher. Difficulty and prep time are our estimate.

Core skill

Basic aircraft-building skills: sheet metal and riveting, fabric covering, wood truss wing ribs, welding and composite lay-up

Refresher

  1. Daily hands-on workshops cover sheet metal construction and riveting, fabric covering, building wood truss wing ribs, oxyacetylene and TIG welding, and composite lay-up.
  2. Workshops and forums are included with admission, and no reservation is required.
  3. Instructors, technical counselors, skilled volunteers and industry experts lead the sessions.
  4. EAA says more than 6,000 people volunteer each year, and that all interests, experience and skills are welcome.
  5. The 2027 workshop schedule is not published yet: check back.

Practise before you go

Safety notes

  • Wear sturdy closed shoes and eye protection when told in workshops.
  • Follow the instructor's directions around tools and equipment.
  • Late July in Wisconsin is hot: bring water and sun protection.

  • Admission is needed to attend; volunteers sign up through EAA.
  • Costs are not listed on Nomad. Check them, and the latest dates, on the official site.
