Skills you'll need
What to learn and practise before you go. Each resource is marked Official or Community-accepted and names its publisher. Difficulty and prep time are our estimate.
Cold-weather working: dressing for long outdoor shifts in arctic conditions
Also useful:
- Logistics: weighing, sorting and loading straw, supply bags and food for the checkpoints
- Race support: communications, checkpoint crew and front-of-house roles
Difficulty and prep time are Curiosta editorial estimates for a first-timer, not organiser figures.
Refresher
- The Iditarod relies on a thousand volunteers across pre-race preparation, the Ceremonial Start in Anchorage, the Official Restart in Willow and the trail to Nome.
- Pre-race jobs are at a warehouse in Anchorage: bagging straw and sorting musher supply bags (the page says you need to be fit and able to lift 50 pounds).
- Some tasks need prior experience or certifications; others are chances to try a few jobs and see what you like best.
- Trail checkpoint positions are based on skills and experience, need a lot of physical activity, and are mostly filled by returning volunteers.
- 2027 volunteer registration opens in November 2026.
Practise before you go
- Read the position descriptions on the volunteer page and note which fit your skills.
- Build cold-weather experience: long outdoor days in winter clothing before you go.
- Read the official pages on dog care and mushing terminology so you can follow what is happening.
Safety notes
- Dress for the weather: outdoor roles run for hours in arctic conditions.
- Follow the lead volunteer's instructions around dog teams.
- Trail roles are physically demanding: apply only if you can manage long hours in the cold.
