Pack for the festival,
clear the border.
Two printable checklists and travel hacks: one for leaving India, one for coming to India. Every rule links to its official source; lines marked “Our tip” are advice.
Rules change: the source wins
Each rule on this page (30 in all) was checked against the official page linked under it on 30 Oct 2026 (IST). If the official page now says something different, follow the official page. We don't list costs.

Travel hacks
Our tips: advice from experience, not rules. Check the official pages above for anything that matters.
- Pack for the festival, not the city. Each listing's “Skills you'll need” section shows what you'll actually be doing, e.g. crewing a tall ship or crewing a balloon.
- Desert burns (Burning Man, AfrikaBurn): read the organiser's survival guide, linked on the listing, before you pack.
- Photograph new gear and its bills before you leave. It helps with customs on return and with insurance claims.
- Split cash and cards between two bags, and keep a day's money in your pocket.
- Download offline maps and a translation pack for the destination's language on home Wi-Fi.

Travel hacks
Our tips: advice from experience, not rules. Check the official pages above for anything that matters.
- Rooftop kite flying at Uttarayan: bring sunglasses, a hat and finger tape to protect your fingers from the string.
- Festival crowds (Durga Puja, Ganesh Chaturthi): carry a small cross-body bag and agree a meeting point.
- Cold-weather festivals (Zanskar, Hornbill): pack thermal layers, and read the listing for any permits.
- Set up your phone for local payments and maps on arrival, and keep some small notes for markets and autos.
- Dress for temples: shoulders and knees covered, and shoes that slip off easily.
